Performance: The Power of Intel’s Meteor Lake

Decoding Intel’s Meteor Lake Processor

Intel’s latest marvel, the Core Ultra 7 155H processor, is powering the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024). The Intel naming conventions change from the usual “Core i5/i7/i9” to simply a “Core Ultra” series. Specifically, in the Meteor Lake series, new performance and efficiency are possible through a chiplet based architecture by providing different nodes for different functions. With this design, it gives a better power management that finds its way into the amazing battery that this Zenbook has.

Benchmarking Performance

The Zenbook 14 OLED also has some strong performance in both real world use and benchmark tests. The laptop does well with multi core tasks, due to increased number of physical cores, to handle demanding applications. Cinebench CPU render tests also indicate that single core performance is slightly behind previous generations. However, performance for both productivity and multimedia is still very good.

Graphics: A Leap Forward with Intel Arc

With its build it of Intel Arc graphics, the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) is one of the standouts. Intel says that these graphics are twice as fast and have twice the efficiency per watt as previous-generation Iris Xe GPU. I was able to verify this assertion. In 3DMark benchmarks, the Zenbook 14 OLED blew away its predecessors with heavier, smoother and more responsive graphics.

Real-Life Gaming Performance

  • Counter-Strike 2: It achieved nearly 40 percent better average FPS at medium settings than models with older GPUs, though we saw a few frame pacing issues.
  • Cyberpunk 2077: On medium settings, but no ray tracing, it managed an average of 30 FPS. This is amazingly capable for an integrated GPU.
  • Valorant: Worked well under a heavy load and were very good at CPU tasks.

Productivity Powerhouse

The Zenbook 14 OLED shines in productivity tasks, beyond gaming. If you’re rendering videos in Adobe Premiere Pro or upscaling footage with Topaz Video AI, the Meteor Lake processor sees to it that you only run at a snail’s pace or not at all. Very notably, Handbrake’s AV1 video encoding went almost 8 times faster, enabled by dedicated AV1 video hardware encoder. It is additionally power efficient — which is perfect for power conscious professionals that need both performance and longevity.

Battery Life: All-Day Performance

The Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) also has among the longest battery life. In typical terms—trawling the web, streaming music or interacting on a document—the laptop gets roughly 8 to 10 hours of power on a single bill. Intel credites this longevity to its chiplet-based design and the entanglement of low power E-cores to deal with background tasks. But while 5 to 6 hours of battery life doesn’t sound too bad, battery life under more intensive tasks like large file transfers or gaming drops to about 5 to 6 hours, which means there is some room for improvement there too.

Thermals and Noise

The Zenbook 14 OLED continues to exhibit ambient thermal performance similar to its predecessors during extended use. But under heavy load the fan noise becomes more noticeable, which may be a slightly bad thing for folks wanting things a bit quieter. Basically, the laptop is exceedingly quiet even when in use casually, making it a perfect work and play laptop, even if it isn’t too amazingly powerful.

Design and Build: Sleek and Portable

Premium Aesthetics

Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) continues with Asus minimalist and premium design. The aluminum laptop looks to be tough and elegant. This being a Nigerian professional, who seems to always be on the move, this is one of the coolest things I have ever seen it’s slim profile an lightweight construction of 1.22 Kg make it really pocket friendly, something you can easily carry and this can be bought for just 70,000 Naira.

Port Selection

asus zenbook 14 oled close up ports
asus zenbook 14 oled close up ports

In terms of connectivity, the Zenbook 14 OLED offers a versatile array of ports:

  • Thunderbolt 4 Ports: Power Delivery and DisplayPort are supported by two ports, facilitating high speed data transfer and connectivity to external displays.
  • USB 3.2 Gen 1 Type-A: The inclusion is welcome but the data transfer rates are not quite as fast as newer standards.
  • HDMI 2.1 TMDS: Smooths out connections with external monitors and TVs.
  • 3.5mm Combo Audio Jack: Headphones and external microphones perfect.

The slightly less speedy USB-A port feels balanced by a wide variety of modern and legacy port selection, all aided by the type-C port.

Display: Yet Vibrant, but With Room for Improvement

asus zenbook 14 oled display quality

As for the display, the Zenbook 14’s 14-inch FHD OLED display just simply looks so good… it has great colors deep build in between and is just a graphical visual. Its 100% of the sRGB color gamut plus 100% of P3 color space is perfect for color-sensitive work such as photo and video editing. Coming in, however, is a slight downgrade of 60Hz refresh rate and lower resolution on the base model compared to the 2.8K resolution which the previous generation offered up with a 90Hz refresh rate.

HDR Performance

The display is HDR certified, though HDR is restricted to when plugged in and when so, there is a visible compromise to the color coverage. Moreover, the pixel shift protection from OLED burn in is causing flicker, an isolated concern that needs further review.

Keyboard and Trackpad: Comfort Meets Functionality

Its Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) features a full size backlit chiclet keyboard with 1.4mm key travel and provides a comfortable, responsive typing experience. While lacking the distinctive ‘ErgoLift’ hinge, the keyboard is still as good as its reputation, with soft key feedback and quiet noise profile.

And if that weren’t enough, the glass trackpad is super impressive too, supporting all sorts of gestures including NumberPad 2.0 where the trackpad doubles as a virtual numpad when you enable NumberPad 2.0. As a result, it’s highly sensitive, and some users have found that it causes accidental touches so they turn off the feature if they want a more seamless experience.

Webcam and Audio: Clear Communication

With a 1080p webcam, the Zenbook 14 OLED is prepared for high quality video calls, and has a dedicated privacy shutter. The built in array microphone is clear enough to record audio in virtual meetings and make content. The down-firing stereo speakers give you rich, clear and loud sound without it’s anything intrusive.

User Experience: Seamless and Efficient

Multitasking and Usability

The Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) also makes for nice multitasking day to day. It doesn’t matter if you are using a single Chrome tab, it runs several Chrome tabs, listening to Spotify stream, or editing LibreOffice documents — it’s no big deal. When you’re on the road, resource management on the laptop keeps its batteries charged to a solid 8 to 10 hours or so, which is quite remarkable.

Nevertheless, they are not perfect in intensive situtations; for instance, when trying to do more demanding tasks such as downloading games or unzipping large files, there’s some minor stuttering occuring and reduced battery life.

Portability across Nigeria diverse landscape

The Zenbook 14 OLED is great follow for people who like to be on the move and reliable, just the way it is for professionals in Nigeria. The laptop’s portability enables productivity in the go either as you commute in busy cities like Lagos or as you work in the in amongst the remoteness of places.

Conclusion: Should You Buy the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024)?

It shows that Asus is really determined to deliver high-quality portable laptops providing top of the line performance. Coming with Intel’s Meteor Lake processor, it combines performance with battery life and design to provide Nigerian professionals a great Ultrabook experience.

Pros

  • All-day battery life
  • Powerful integrated Intel Arc graphics
  • Premium and lightweight designing
  • Stunning OLED display
  • Excellent keyboard, excellent trackpad

Cons

  • Higher price point
  • Lowered display resolution by a little bit and refresh rate too.
  • Some performance optimization difficulties that should occur occasionally
  • Prone to fingerprint smudges

Being on the pricier end, the Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) doesn’t come cheap, but it’s well worth the investment if portability and functionality are your main priority and you’re not interested in the niceties of a 14in design. For users that want raw GPU power, there aren’t many laptops that dedicate NVIDIA GPUs such as the RTX 3050 or RTX 4050, and they might provide better value.

In short, the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED (2024) delivers a much machine that stands out as one of the best thin and light laptops on the market, for the price, but especially if design, performance and power efficiency is your focus.
